A group of friends gather for a pre-wedding party that ends in an existential nightmare when an estranged friend arrives with a mysterious toy that awakens long-buried secrets, desires, and anger. We meet some of the cast and learn that there is some drama going on behind the scenes. We are then introduced to an interesting mechanism that drives the rest of the film. At this point I thought I was in for something really special. I didn’t realize there were issues holding the movie back.
I don’t want to go into too much detail because it would ruin the premise of the movie. But anyone who watches this movie will quickly understand what I’m talking about in terms of confusion. I will say that while the middle of the movie is very confusing, it clears up and becomes a bit more coherent towards the end. You still need your wits about you at all times, that’s for sure.
There are two of them and they are very toxic people who are hard to care about and hard to be around. I really think the movie could have easily cut out 2-3 characters and nothing would have been lost. And as for making her toxic, I get that it makes for juicier drama, but sacrificing likability is a big problem. If you stay on top of the story and follow all the character/story arcs, you’ll probably have a great time because there are some cute little tricks at the end.
It was an ambitious undertaking to make a film out of this complicated work, and overall, they did a great job. 6/10.. The program "What We Do in the Shadows" is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
